Discussion:
Assign static IP address to a DHCP client

I assigned static IP addresses to a few DHCP clients. Some Winodws servers
are fine after switching from DHCP clients; but I am having problem with one
Windows XP computer. I cannot ping the computer by its computer name, I can
only ping it by its new static IP address. It's been a few days, it still
cannot be pinged by the computer name. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks a lot!

Hello,

Thank you for your post.

This problem might be caused by DNS Name resolution or NetBIOS name
resolution related issues.

In order to narrow down the issue, please help answer the following
questions first.

1. Please copy the result of pinging computer name and post back the result.

2. Please let me know whether you have deployed Windows DNS server in your
network.

3. If yes, please check whether you could ping DNS Server from the problem
XP machine correctly. Please also try to run 'nslookup' command on XP
machine to check whether the DNS name resolution works correctly.

To do this, please follow the below steps:
3.1 Press Start
3.2 Click Run, type 'CMD' and press Enter
3.3 Type 'nslookup' and press Enter
3.4 Type the computer name and then copy and post back the output result.
Meanwhile, please check whether the name is registered correctly on the DNS
Server. Please also check whether dynamic registration is enabled on DNS
Server.

4. If no, please let me know whether you have enabled NetBIOS over TCPIP
and configured WINS server on client XP machine.

To Check this, please do as follows:
4.1 From the Network and Dial-up Connections icon in Control Panel , select
Local Area onnection and right-click Properties .
4.2 On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list of
components, and click the Properties button.
4.3 Click the Advanced button.
4.4 Click the WINS tab. Check NetBIOS setting and WINS settings.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks for the information. It really helped me.

I checked the DNS record and saw that the DNS server was still holding on
the old IP address. After I modified the IP address, the problem went away.

Please let me know how or where I can check the "dynamic registration"
setting on the DNS server; or is it a client setting?

We have both DNS and WINS. How will WINS affect this?

Thanks and regards,

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

If you have deployed DNS server and WINS server in your network, you could
allow DNS to use WINS resolution so that the name resolution query which is
not found in DNS name space will be forwarded to WINS Server.

However, if the query is already found in DNS name space, then it will not
be forwarded to WINS server.

For your current situation, you need to enable dynamic updates on your DNS
server so that the records will be updated when the clients change their IP
addresses.

To enable dynamic updates using the Windows interface
1. Open the DNS snap-in.

2. In the console tree, right-click the applicable zone, and then click
Properties.

3. On the General tab, verify that the zone Type is either Primary or
Active Directory-Integrated.

4. In Dynamic updates, click Nonsecure and secure.

If you have an Active Directory-integrated zones in an AD domain
environment, it is recommended to enable secure dynamic updates instead.

To enable secure dynamic updates using the Windows interface

1. Open the DNS snap-in.

2. In the console tree, right-click the applicable zone, and then click
Properties.

3. On the General tab, verify that the zone type is Active
Directory-Integrated.

4. In Dynamic updates, click Secure only.

Please also check the dynamic update configuration on client.

To change the dynamic update defaults on the dynamic update client:

1. Open Network Connections folder.

2. Right-click the connection that you want to configure, and then click
Properties .

3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) , click Properties , click Advanced ,
and then click the DNS tab.

4. Ensure the "Register this connection's address in DNS" options is
selected is selected. This default configuration causes the client to
request that the client register the A resource record and the server
register the PTR resource record. In this case, the name to be used in DNS
registration is a concatenation of the computer name and primary DNS suffix
of the computer.
